Biological efficiency
BE compares fresh mushroom weight to the dry weight of the substrate it grew on. It's the standard way to compare runs.
Sample values shown. Add up every flush from the same block for a full-run BE.
How this calculator works
Biological efficiency is fresh mushroom weight divided by dry substrate weight, times 100. It lets you compare runs across different block sizes and recipes.
Use the dry weight of the substrate before hydration, and add up all flushes from the same block for a full-run figure. Results above 100% are normal for productive species because fresh mushrooms are mostly water.
Common questions
What is a good biological efficiency?
It depends on species and substrate. Oyster mushrooms on good substrate often reach 75% to 100% or more; many other species run lower.
Should I weigh the substrate wet or dry?
Dry. BE is defined against the dry weight of the substrate, before you add water.
Does spawn count toward substrate weight?
Growers differ. Many include the dry weight of the spawn grain too. Pick one method and use it consistently.
